Aspen!

We had a great night in Moab under the stars and got up early to start the drive to Aspen. We went by a little coffee shop called Eklectic Cafe for coffee and bagel sandwiches. they were so delicious as everything was either homemade or grown local and they provided us lots of energy for our drive. We took the "River Road" for the first hour and a half of our drive. This road follows the Colorado River which made for gorgeous views. We saw one man on a raft with a ton of luggage, so we think he might have been rafting far away, perhaps to the Grand Canyon. I know that sounds crazy to raft from Utah to the Grand Canyon, but based on all the extreme sporting we have seen, it's safe to say it isn't out of the ordinary. We also saw some runners running up and down the mountain along the river. We connected to I-70 which was unlike most of our interstates. It had great views and no bad traffic :) We arrived in Aspen in time for a late lunch. We went to a place called Little Annie's and had a full lunch. Then, we went to an ice cream place called Paradise Bakery. Now, yes it was 30 degrees out but we had been wanting good ice cream for about 5 days so we had to take the opportunity once we found a place with great reviews. And it did not disappoint! They even gave us a small cookie with our ice cream. We walked around downtown Aspen for a good while and looked in all the shops. About half of the stores and restaurants are closed since it is technically off season so that made it a bit challenging to find a good place to eat. We started off with an appetizer of yellowtail crudo at a local place called Justice Snow and then went to Meat and Cheese for a salad and meat and cheese board. It was a great lighter dinner. We enjoyed a cold but pretty walk back to our hotel before turning in for the evening. We stayed at the Mountain Chalet in Aspen and it was so nice. They had laundry, a pool, a hot tub, a game room, and a kitchen/ conference room with full breakfast. It had an awesome fire roaring in the main room along with coffee, hot cocoa, and warm cookies - exactly what I envision in a great ski lodge. We loved Aspen and can't wait to come back during season!

  1. Aaahhhh! This all sounds so delightful. The temperature in Florida has hit the summer time 90's and it is already stifling. That 30 degree weather WITH the ski lodge amenities sounds really good right now! Only thing I could say to improve is having the ice cream in the lodge with the fire and hot cocoa!

  2. Aspen, wow that is the big time. I have dreamed of Moab for kind of a goofy reason it is the premier offered vehicle playground of the country. I would REALLY love to spend a day there and just rent some big boy toy and make a mess on the ground. The ski lodge sounds awesome, That is kind of the way we found our favorite mexican blend coffee in front a lodge fireplace on a cold Vermont evening. Such great memories. I guess the off season has it's advantages and disadvantages finding something to eat but not having a 3 mile line to stand in.

  3. Yes Mom this lodge was the best. No ice cream, but there's a closeby place with some!
Bob- yes Moab has tons of big boy toys you can rent or bring your own. It's such a cool place! Ahh, yes the elusive green mountain coffee that you all love! Yes, no lines and no waiting!
